Apple’s App Store Debuts Indie Game Showcase

Apple has just released a new section in their App Store’s homepage called “Indie Game Showcase.” This new section is specifically designed to highlight and promote iOS games created by independent developers in the mobile game industry.

The new category description reads, “Often made up of just a few dedicated members, independent studios prove that what really matters is the size of your dream. In each Indie Game Showcase, we celebrate a popular game and its creative team, highlighting the developer’s titles along with their favorite games from other studios.”

Device 6 ImageThe first indie game and studio highlighted in Apple’s showcase is Simogo and their acclaimed puzzler Device 6. The game received a large amount of buzz this year. At the recent Game Developers Choice Awards the app was nominated for the Innovation Award and Best Handheld/Mobile Game categories. Apple also mentions in the segment that Simogo has been “crafting outstanding games exclusively for the App Store” since its beginning. In the showcase the studio’s previous apps Year walk and Beat Sneak Bandit were listed as examples.

“With Device 6, the team harnessed everything they’d learned and delivered an incredible hybrid of text adventure and puzzle game that lets you explore an interactive novel,” states Apple. “It’s an experience tailor-fit for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and Device 6’s unique gameplay made it one of our runners-up for 2013’s Game of the Year.”

Apple establishing a showcase dedicated to the indie app developer is phenomenal news. Small studios and independent devs have been making huge strides in the industry by creating innovative and entertaining apps with the ability to rise up the charts from obscurity to popularity. A recent report in January revealed that over $10 billion was spent in Apple’s App Store in 2013. The company’s support will only increase the potential revenue and success for independent app developers in the future. Apple also released a “10 Essential Indie Games” section in the App Store’s Games category.
