Free Tool Game Friday: Grimstorm

Hello everyone – and welcome to another edition of Free Tool…err…Free Game Friday! Typically, we highlight a free tool dedicated to helping you to stay more productive than ever. But this week, I wanted to change things up and highlight a free game that will give you something to do over the weekend (and who knows? Maybe you’ll be inspired to include a few gameplay elements for your own game). Grimstorm is the game, and if you love brutally difficult platformers, you’re going to have a blast with this one!

Created as part of Gamejolt’s Adventure Jam, Grimstorm is a 2D platformer (with a clear focus on combat) that’s about one thing: storming a castle and surviving the horrors that await you. Combat is pretty simple by design yet hard to master: attack, block, rinse, and repeat. As for the gameplay, it’s one of the things that makes Grimstorm so unique. When you die, you have to start back from the outside of the castle gates – and you will want to avoid this, because the enemies you’ve killed will also respawn.

Yet, the world doesn’t totally reset – and that’s what makes Grimstorm so interesting. For example, if you unlock a door or pick up an item, the door will remain open and your item will stay in your inventory, respectfully. Thus, even though the game is brutal, it doesn’t feel as if you are playing with your hands tied behind your back; eventually, you will find the most optimal paths and shortcuts to take in order to progress further into the game.

The game can be played via your browser or downloaded for offline play. Give it a shot today, and I guarantee that like me, you will be hooked!

That’s it for this week’s edition! We’ll be back next week with a free tool. Have any suggestions for a free tool that you think should be featured in a future installment of Free Tool Friday? Let us know in the comments below!
