Marketing your indie studio is essential to your success – but almost everybody knows that. What’s more, it’s vital that you know of a few, unique ways to market your indie studio so you don’t blend in with everyone else. Marketing using the most common methods is essential to your success (Facebook, Twitter, etc. – we mention them all the time on here), but you don’t need to bank only on these methods. Thus, that leads me to this week’s series: unique ways to market your indie studio.
For most of this week, we are going to analyze a few unique ways that you can market your indie studio that most indie devs never think about. Follow our advice, and you are sure to capture the attention of those around you. Today, we’re going to focus on how philanthropy can get you to grow your indie studio better than ever!
Do I really need to use philanthropy to market?
Yes. CECP surveyed some of the most renowned corporations nearly two years ago, and they discovered that 59% of them had increased their philanthropy between 2007 and 2012 for one reason: the more good they do, the more customers they acquire. It goes back to what we’ve said in past posts: if you come across as a real person – essentially, someone that cares – people will want to support you.
Great for publicity
If you have been looking for a reason to send out press releases related to your indie studio, announcing your latest philanthropic activities is the best way to get your name out there quickly. Whether you want to announce your latest charity drive or you want to mention that you are playing video games for charity (we’ll talk about how to get started in just a second), the more you give back to your community and the world, the more you can tout it in press releases, social media, etc. People love hearing about the great, charitable work that others do, and this is a great way to get noticed!
How can I get started?
There are a few ways that you can start using philanthropy in an effort to jumpstart your marketing strategy. Below are just a few ideas worth pursuing:
Give back to your community
We mentioned marketing offline earlier this month, so combine this tip with your philanthropic efforts. Your local community probably has a few charity programs already, so consider donating, sponsoring, and advertising your indie studio for these charity programs. Make your community realize that whenever it comes to charity, your indie studio is always ready to help you. This will attract many people in your community, and they will immediately become interested in what you do.
You’ve probably heard of people playing video games for charity, but for those that haven’t we’ll give you a quick breakdown. Tons of gamers over the years have endured grueling game marathon sessions where they livestream themselves playing games for one day, sometimes even one weekend straight. They ask for pledges (e.g. someone pledges to give X amount of dollars for every hour played), and after the marathon session is over they donate the money to a charity of their choice.
Because it’s essential that you are marketing using video in 2015, this is a great opportunity for you and your team to have a great time playing awesome games for a great cause (this would also be the perfect opportunity for a press release).
Contribute a percentage of sales to a charity
Want to know one of the best ways to improve your brand? Contributing a percentage of sales from your upcoming indie game to a charity of your choice for a pre-determined period of time. It’ll be awesome press for your indie studio, and people will be more inclined to purchase it than before since it’s for charity.
This is a fairly big subject, so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask in the comments below!
