We all have negative memories from our past that we’re not very proud of. Some are embarrassing, emotional, life-altering – you get the picture. These negative memories are not merely just information stored in our head, though. On the contrary: negative memories can have a serious impact on how we conduct our lives personally and professionally – and we may not even know it!

Know that your memories are flexible
If you think about it, our memories are never the same as we remember them. Have you ever watched a home movie from an event you remember really well, yet once you see it on film, it’s very different from how you remember it? That’s because when we recall memories, we are recalling the last thing we remember about them. Thus, we can never truly recall an event as it happened with 100% accuracy!
This is kind of depressing, but in an odd way, kind of relieving. As stated above, we all have that one negative memory that we hang on to – the one memory that, even unwillingly, defines us when we make certain decisions or think about certain things. Sure, those memories are going to stay with us, but it’s important to realize that the memory we are having and how it happened are two completely different things!
And you know something? Unless the event has been recorded, we’ll never truly be able to recall the latter with 100% accuracy. Why should they affect us? They shouldn’t, so don’t allow them.
Realize your negative memories are subjective
Of course, key facts about a memory are always going to remain. For example, if you fell and broke your arm in the 7th grade, the details of the memory may be sketchy, but one thing is always going to be true about the memory: you broke your arm, and that is always going to stay with you. The Emotion Machine states that you shouldn’t try and change the facts surrounding your negative memories: you won’t be able to, and why would you want to fool yourself into believing a lie anyway? Instead, you need to change your perception to something constructive.
The best way? Discuss it with a close friend or relative. It’s advice that isn’t that game-changing: just talk it out. This will give you a new perspective on the memory, and could minimize the negativity associated with the memory. Moreover, you can try to find something humorous about the situation. I’ve personally done this many times with negative memories, and it’s a great way to see the silver lining of any situation and make it less toxic.
Above all, know that your negative memories are just that: memories. They can’t hurt you, shouldn’t define you, and most importantly, should never hold you back from your true potential. We probably all know that one person that has dreams, but because of one event, they are too scared to pursue their dreams and are fine with them remaining only as that: dreams. Don’t let this be you! You want to build and grow your indie studio into something you can be proud of, and if you have negative memories holding you back via fears, self-doubt, etc., just realize that they are memories that can never touch you. They happened, sure, but that was in the past.
Besides: the details as you remember them are different than how they actually happened. Move forward, put your fears to rest, and know that it’s a new day. Stop allowing negative memories to control you, and go forth with building your indie studio empire!
