In a recent interview conducted by Game Academy and Buildbox founder, Trey Smith, Florian Porkert, the creator of the hit game Ball Jump, shared a few of his top tips for indie developers. One of the most important tips he suggested following if you’re trying to create a mobile game, is to believe in yourself. His advice, although simple, is very true.
As game developers we often forget that we are also entrepreneurs or ‘apptrepreneurs.’ And in most areas of our lives, especially in business self-belief and confidence is essential. Believing in yourself and having a success oriented mindset will make the difference in whether or not you give up when things get rough.
Entrepreneur.com had an excellent article on this topic called ‘The 5 Components of the Mindset That Will Let You Live Your Dream Life.’ In it author Matthew Toren, discusses several things you can do to help shift your mindset for success. These tips apply to not only business but to game developers as well.
Top 4 Indie Developer Tips for Adopting a Success Mindset
#1 – You Got This!
“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” – John Wooden
The first tip for shifting your mindset is to believe that you are capable of achieving not only your dreams but whatever task is set before you. Adopt the mindset that you can handle any challenges that come your way. Remember you are capable. Tell yourself, “You got this!”
Remind yourself periodically or as often as you need to that you have all the necessary skills and abilities to accomplish your goals. If you don’t have a specific skill like programming or a talent for art you can always learn it or outsource that particular task to someone else to help you complete your game. Don’t let doubt hold you back from progress.
#2 – Let Go of Excuses & Blame
“You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” – Jim Rohn
It’s important to commit to being 100% accountable for your actions. Remember that you are in control of your life through the choices that you make. There is no room for blaming others. Your success or failure is determined by you. Dwelling on mistakes and finding fault among your employees or outsourcers will only stagnate progress and further prevent you from resolving the issue. If things are not working be proactive in seeking out a solution. Avoid playing the blame game.
#3 – Be Resilient. Never Give Up!
“Every experience prepares you for the next.” – Howard Schultz
Everyone fails and experience setbacks from time to time. Failure is a part of the success process. As an indie developer, it’s essential to keep this in mind. Although every dev dreams of their first game becoming a smash hit, always remember it takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen. Research, strategy, and experience are all determining factors in play.
Many of the major game-changers in the mobile industry like Supercell, Rovio, and Glu Games have had their share of titles that didn’t make an impact on the charts. Failure is something that is unavoidable. Never give up on your app business. Be resilient. With every game you develop try to improve and learn from the experience.
#4 – Get Inspired, Stay Passionate
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs
The legendary Steve Jobs said it best, to do great work you have to love what you do. It’s not hard to be inspired in the game industry. Just a quick browse through the top games in the App Store can be enough to get those wheels turning. The secret however, is staying passionate about your project. Take an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning or whatever time is ideal for you to brainstorm and visualize. Get excited about your upcoming game. Play similar games that inspire you, jot down notes, read articles with game development tips, and listen to podcasts. Make an effort daily to get inspired. Remember enthusiasm plus passion equals success.
