Free Tool Friday: Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop

Happy Friday everyone, and welcome to another edition of Free Tool Friday! Every week, we highlight a free tool aimed at improving your indie studio’s productivity and generally making your work life easier. This week’s free tool is no exception either, and after spending just a few minutes with it, you’re going to wonder how you managed to go without it for so long!

I’m talking about Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop: an app for Google Play (also available for the App Store, but it’s $2.99) that allows you to stream your desktop to your mobile device. How many times have you wanted to look at your desktop’s screen at the spur of the moment, yet you didn’t want to have to physically go over to the desktop? Probably plenty of times. Sometimes, you just want to pull up some useful information on your mobile device that is only available on your desktop, and that’s where this fantastic app delivers!

The great thing about Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop is that if you are connected to the same network as your desktop, you can access your desktop absolutely free! When using the app, you will be amazed by how lag-free the app is as well. Typically, these types of apps are a little finicky and just don’t feel very stable, but not Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop. Seriously, it feels like you are using your desktop in real-time when accessing your desktop from your mobile device!

Unfortunately, if you want to use Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop anywhere in the world, it’s going to cost you ($2.99 per month). If you don’t mind paying a few bucks a month though, it’s well worth it. I’ve been a subscriber for a few years myself, and I can honestly say that no matter if I’m accessing my desktop via a cellular connection or someone else’s Wi-Fi connection, it has always been stable. It has a near perfect rating on Google Play for a  reason, and it’s because quite frankly, this app rocks!

That’s it for this edition of Free Tool Friday! If you have any recommendations for a tool we should feature on a future installment of Free Tool Friday, let us know in the comments below!
