Ex-Zynga Development Team Launches New Game Studio, Boss Fight Entertainment

The former Zynga Texas-based development team that created the popular social game CastleVille has launched a new game studio called Boss Fight Entertainment. The company will be lead by general manager Bill Jackson, president & CEO David Rippley, and co-founder Scott Winsett.

Boss Fight Entertainment is made up of the core development team from Bonfire Studio, the original game development company that Zynga purchased in 2010 to serve as part of their Texas division.

In 2011 Jackson, Rippley, and Winsett helped create CastleVille which was a massive success for the publisher. Unfortunately as the mobile industry took off, Zynga had trouble transitioning from popular online social games to apps. They loss a significant amount of money and had to downsize. Their Zynga studio was shutdown. But like the saying goes, “You can’t keep a good app developer down.”

Boss Fight Entertainment was actually established in June 2013, but has been quietly kept under wraps until now. So far the company has 25 employees on staff and is working on what they refer to as “high-quality mobile free-to-play games” which will be released early this year.

“We have always been committed to deep games that are simple on the surface but have a strategy element,” commented general manager, Bill Jackson. “We’ve got a great team, and we have been very fortunate to keep together, even in big transitions like companies closing down. This team loves to be together and it has had success.”

In an interview with Venturebeat Jackson said, “We learned quite a bit about designing and operating free-to-play games over the last five years. Boss Fight’s next game will combine everything we know about free-to-play and mobile with the high production quality of our biggest franchise titles. We’re already working on an original IP that we’ll start talking about in the coming months.”

The establishment of Boss Fight Entertainment is a perfect example of how it’s possible for veteran teams to branch off and form their own studios in today’s mobile market.
