The retail giant known as Amazon has hit a new milestone this week. Today they officially announced that the Amazon Appstore selection now has over 240,000 apps available in 200 different countries. The Amazon Appstore has tripled in growth over the past year with an increase in new developers and promotions. From their meager beginnings with only 80,000 apps and games, this is a huge accomplishment. Although they still have a long way to go in order to catch up with Apple and Google Play’s massive million+ selections, the steady growth proves that more app developers are joining Amazon’s platform.
Amazon’s coins have also increased in popularity. An estimated hundred million plus coins has been spent in apps, games, and in-app items to-date. Developers are reporting generating higher revenue from their applications listed in their Appstore as well. A recent report conducted by IDC and Amazon revealed that 65% of developers’ total revenue accumulated on Kindle Fire is equal to, or even better than apps on other platforms. Out of the same group of developers that were surveyed 74% stated that the average revenue per app/user is equal to or better on Kindle Fire. A slightly higher number of developers, approximately 76% indicated that the Kindle Fire platform helped them connect with new market divisions.
“Developers tell us that they experience improved reach, greater monetization, and, oftentimes, higher revenue when they have their apps and games in the Amazon Appstore,” said Mike George, Vice President of Amazon Appstore and Games. “But this is just the beginning – we’re building more services and capabilities for developers and more Android-based APIs based on their feedback. Most Android apps just work on Kindle Fire, and with an Appstore made for Android devices, Amazon’s Appstore can help developers distribute their apps on Android devices all over the world. It’s a great time for developers to bring their apps to the Amazon Appstore.”
This exciting milestone has come right on time for the mega store. They are holding a special event scheduled for Wednesday which is rumored to be the unveiling of their upcoming smart phones.
